Cards Counted - and a big "Thank You!"

E-mail Print PDF

The Greening Campaign cards have now been counted - volunteers have been out on the streets of Horsham counting cards in windows and it's time to say a big "Thank You!" to everyone involved in this stage of the Greening Campaign in Horsham.

If you put a card in your window then thank you, not only for putting the card in your window, but also for taking on the challenges and completing five (or maybe more) of them.

If you were one of the volunteers who counted then thank you for all of your efforts.

Now that the cards have been counted there are a few calculations to do where the Greening Campaign get an idea of the amount of money (and CO2) that's been saved compared to a community where no-one had completed any of the challenges.  Once those calculations are complete we'll post the details here.

Meanwhile, once again, thank you for displaying and/or counting the cards.

Challenge Cards Distributed

The challenges on the card

The Challenge Cards have been distributed to Horsham town residents with their copy of Horsham District News.  If you live in Horsham town and haven't received a card and would like one, then you can download one from here and print it out.  Remember that Greening Horsham only applies to Horsham town and not to the whole district.  Other groups are working in Henfield for example, and will be starting in Southwater soon.

Once you've received the challenge card you can start working on the challenges, and when you've completed 5 of them please put the card in your window so that we can count them.

If you want to do more to help we'd love you to help us with the count - if you would like to count the cards in your road then please get in touch with us either through the "Contact Us" section of this site, or e-mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. What you told us

Your comments from the launch

At the Greening Horsham launch we had some flip charts where visitors could write their ideas for Greening Horsham.  Here, in no particular order, are your suggestions and comments:

  • Turning down the thermostats for heating by a few degrees in public buildings and shops.

  • Smaller houses!

  • Short term car hire.

  • Hot water bottles. Use the same water every night. Reheat in small electric kettle in bedroom.

  • Take home paper napkins (if clean) from café’s- only your own though!

  • Have a car free day once a week.

  • Cycle path linking Crawley to Horsham along the verge of the A264 joining the existing one on the A23. I take my life in my hands cycling to work every day. WSCC did a similar thing on the A259 from Chichester to Bognor please do it here!

  • If its not in use, turn it off. £875 million is estimated as wasted across the county by “stand by” which was 84% of fully switched on.

  • Decent cycle parking at Sainsbury’s and Tescos etc

  • Cycle paths that actually join together (yes please x2 and I agree written beside).

  • Fewer signs telling people not to cycle, more encouragement for cyclists.

  • Safe traffic free routes.

  • Mums walking their children to school rather than driving them by car, especially when they live close by.

  • More cycle lanes.

  • Supermarkets to use the Onya bags (made from recycled products, attractive, could advertise their name, small to keep in handbag/car.

  • No building on Greenfield sites- such as HDC is proposing- West of Horsham

Electronic Thermostats

E-mail Print PDF

One of the challenges for Greening Horsham is to "Turn the thermostat down by 1o C and save £50 and 330kg of CO2".  At the launch on 6th March there were some leaflets available with details of electronic thermostats - the advantages and the types.  If you missed the leaflet and would like a copy you can download a copy from here.

After the Launch, Now What?

E-mail Print PDF

The Horsham Greening Campaign Launch took place at County Hall North on 6th March and was attended by over 250 people.  With displays from local groups interpreting the challenges there was plenty for visitors to see and do. In no particular order the challenges and displays were:

  • A display by pupils from Millais school on turning off standbys.
  • Tanbridge School had a map of Horsham showing how you could walk or cycle to places within one mile.
  • Hurst Road Youth Club also had a display showing where was a mile away.
  • Transition Horsham had two displays (greedy!), one showing the effect of cavity wall insulation and one showing how hard you have to pedal to generate 100 Watts.
  • The Strawford Centre had us working out how much water we really needed to boil to make a cup of tea.
  • Chris had displays showing how you can save by turning down the thermostat and wearing a thicker jumper.
  • Kingslea School demonstrated how much water you can waste by leaving the tap running when you clean your teeth
  • How much water you can save by shortening your shower time by one minute was interpreted by the Brownies and Guides.
  • There was a display of energy saving lightbulbs
  • There were leaflets from the Love Food Hate Waste campaign.
  • Children could leave a green "footprint".

The launch was busy from start to finish and both the West Sussex County Times and The Resident captured the atmosphere - you can see pictures and read more about the event in this week's papers.

So, what to do next?  The challenge cards have been distributed so you can start working on the challenges, and when you've completed 5 of them please put the card in your window so that we can count them.
